Trivia About The Witness.
It is constantly deconstructing all the things that need deconstruction—the self, history, morality, sexuality, civilization—but nothing falls apart enough.
At several points it engulfs you in an atmosphere which is hard to shake off.
I actually read this book in Spanish El Entenado. Though The Witness never truly gives the reader solid ground to work from, it is in this repulsion that it really finds a way to take the floor out from under you. The prose, translated marvelously by the great Margaret Jull Costa, is preternaturally smooth; there are no jutting words to snag too much meaning, no swirls of rhetoric to turn aside the current. Overall this book did not fail to have an impact on me.
When a larger party of Spanish is sighted, the Indians send the narrator down river in a canoe, where he is picked up by conquistadores and entrusted to a priest.
It is history looked at from the wrong end of a telescope, but the telescope is cloudy on both ends. Juan Jose Saer was born in Argentina in and is considered one of Argentina’s leading writers of the post-Borges generation.
So sure it’s all symbolic in a way, it all serves a purpose and yes, good literature sometimes will make your stomach turn. It made me think enyenado it seems the author did some thinking too while writing this.

The plot revolves around a cabin boy who is captured and who spends the next ten years living with a tribe of man-eating Indians in South America in the 16th century, but this vague and admittedly shocking description gives only an approximation of what Saer is doing in this work.
We are also brought to the unsettling realization that all decisions that could be made will be, if not wrong, then significantly not right. This is one of my favourite books.
